Select technical detail to view a description of our steam kit design.

These models are all designed to the same specification. They have; steel loco frames that are sprung on each axlebox. The bogie is a bar frame type with central springs and working equalising bars, just like the Churchward design. The working outside cylinders are fitted with ‘O’ ring seals to the piston heads and piston rods. The valvegear is a robust and reliable slip eccentric type, protected from accidental damage between the frames. Our new steamchest design eliminates the use of sealants. An axle pump, driven from the driving axle, is of a recent design that allows easy access to the valves should foreign bodies find their way in. Lubrication is by the displacement   ( Roscoe) type.

The boiler is internally fired and heated by our well proven , multi wick burner. It is fitted with safety valve, regulator, blower control, pressure gauge and water level test cock. The clack valve is mounted off the boiler.

The tender holds a generous supply of methylated spirit that is fed to the burner through a simple level control to give a constant supply at the burner. There is also a fuel shut off valve. Refilling is via a sealed push-in filler plug that can be used whilst the loco is in steam.   The remainder of the tender is the boiler water tank that also houses the hand pump, used to feed the boiler when the loco is stationary. The by-pass control that regulates the axlepump delivery to the boiler, is part of this assembly.

There is a sensible level of detail above the footplate, bearing in mind that fine, delicate features tend to get damaged on live steam models when they are cleaned down with rag after use.

Some brakegear components are supplied that will allow the modeller to ‘fill in the gaps’ under the loco and tender, however a full representation of the full size design is not possible, or even practical. Messers Churchward and Collett did not have spirit sumps, feeds and burners to contend with.   Also remember that for these components to look right, their strength may not be sufficient to withstand the knocks they may receive in a derailment.

As with most railway subjects that are modelled, if you are a firm enthusiast for absolute authenticity, then work from a photo of your chosen model to ensure that you have the correct variants fitted on the date the picture was taken. As producers of kits we do not pretend to know and cover every modification, we produce a faithful ‘generic’ model, usually based on the original design. This model has been designed with a 3500 gallon tender.

These kits produced for those whose machining facilities or skills are limited or whose modelling time is at a premium.

The boiler is built, tested and certified. The cylinder units come as a ‘loose assembly’ with pistons and valves in place ready for you carry out the final assembly and seal it up. Items such as hand and axlepump bodies are pre assembled. The kit includes  laser cut steel items, etched brass components, all machining done, pressure gauge, screws, nuts, rivets, ‘O’ ring seals, springs etc. to complete the assembly.

You will require a bench and vice, some hand tools, a drilling facility (which could be an electric drill on a stand) and a small gas torch for soldering. The work includes bending sheet metal, drilling piloted holes out to size, tapping threads in holes ( in many cases nuts could be used instead), soft and hard ( silver) soldering of small items.

The model making hobby is littered with part built projects which have been abandoned because the modeller has hit a problem. Included in the price are two hours of our time, a ‘get out of trouble’ service. It could be advice on the phone, a practical soldering training session in our works, correcting a mishap or setting valve timing. Apart from phone calls, a modest charge will be made for time spent over your two hours.

We can also supply replacements for individual components providing they are returned for us to identify. For etched items there will be charge depending on the size. Whitemetal returned with stamped addressed packing are free. Laser cut steel may be a problem as there are minimum order quantities involved and we shall only order a limited number of spares.

The Construction  Guide comprises over  30 pages of photographs, exploded diagrams produced on 3D CAD and text, together with identification diagrams and drawings. It takes you through each stage, including jigs and methods, settings and adjustments, finishing with operation and use.
